This is the world that the Supreme Court dreamed up for us in their Citizen's United ruling. Now that money is equivalent to speech, we all have to carefully weigh if our purchases will be used against us in our political system.

To anyone who is/was a crusader against cancel culture, recognize the source of it. Become a crusader against Citizen's United instead. It would be a much more productive coalition.

It was absolutely the nail on the coffin for democracy, right after Mitch blocking Obama's SC nominee.

Yeah I find myself in the same boat. I don't know if it's a thing with just Bay area tech folks or what.

(btw dope earthbound reference in your username if that's what it is)

Yes it is an Earthbound reference!

100% agreed. Puts into perspective who you're talking to on this website.

Hear fucking hear. Every time there's a Musk-related product release posted here, and people excitedly chatter about it without even mentioning the massive elephant in the room, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

To be frank, I think this community's time has come and gone. It seems like most of the remaining members are just corporate mercs who don't care one whit about the trail of blood and misery this man leaves behind him. Certainly nothing to do with "hackers" of yore.

(Of course, these comments will be flagged into oblivion. But thank you for putting this feeling into words.)

it sounds like the bubble is in Orange County. Not everyone is able to ignore the side effects of "political noise"

Ah yes when I want to escape my insular, ivory tower life, when I want to connect to common, everyday Americans, the first place that comes to mind is Orange County, CA. These salt of the earth people don’t worry about frivolous little concerns such as the cost of living. Unaffected by petty concerns, Joe Mainstreet of Orange County, CA looks at a line up of electric car options for him and his family, and every the pragmatist says “give me the $80k giant toe nail clipper”.

You yourself might want to do a quick Google search or AI chat and note:

Musk says SpaceX did restrict Starlink, as Ukraine says the tech has been restored

https://www.npr.org/2026/10/24/nx-s1-6015482/ukraine-starlin...

> In a post on social media site X, Musk said that Ukraine had been violating Starlink's terms of service by using it for offensive military activity.

> On Saturday, Ukraine said that Starlink and the military's use of the related Starshield technology were back to high operating speeds after more than a week of disruptions.

> Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X that the restoration began overnight.

> "The most important thing today is that Starlink and Starshield operations have been restored to the speeds we had before the restrictions," Zelenskyy said. "The speeds are now where they need to be."

I don't see how that refutes the points of the above comment. What you posted is logically consistent with it. Deductively, it's possible that Starshield, fully controlled by US Gov and given to Ukraine by US Gov was temporarily limited/revoked by US Gov due to some potentially geopolitical-escalation-relevant tactical disagreement crisis, and concurrently or as a fallback Ukrainian forces surreptitiously used civilian Starlinks for offensive military activity and that part was then understandably stopped because of Starlink ToS enforcement.

Still no conclusive proof of the Starshield access side being controlled by SpaceX - just ambiguous "wet streets cause rain" causal inferences and assumptions worded ambiguously - conspiracy theory promulgation.

It does however seem that commentators and media do not like the Starlink ToS and would prefer to have a civilian telecom somehow maintain global licenses with hundreds of countries while also surreptitiously becoming a mercenary operation with selective modification of its ToS based on their preferences of who is involved.
