First time I opened vi I had to power cycle the computer to get out of it. If nano/pico is not user friendly, vi is user user antagonistic.

Oh I absolutely agree, none of vi, emacs, nano/pico make any sense to a beginner. vi probably the worst because of the modes. But I my point was just that I don't think nano is particulary beginner-friendly. Maybe the least worst though.
