My county appraises my home for much more than I could sell it for, and my property tax is based on that county appraisal. I have tried to get the appraisal down to realistic number -- I file annual appraisal protests.

I'm in favor of paying for public schools but would prefer the county appraise properties realistically and then raise the tax rate to compensate, rather than inflate the appraisal so they can claim a lower tax rate.
