Honestly, for me it's having an always-reachable place on the internet that I control. It's somewhere I can ssh to and write a note. It's somewhere I can proxy to to get around geoblocking. But most importantly, it's my place on the otherwise terrible internet.
(I realize a VPS at a hosting provider is still at the mercy of said provider, of course.)
PS:
> DHH's "AI shed" idea got me thinking
Here's some free advice: stop listening to xenophobic, racewar-encouraging pigs like DHH.
Yeah someones political opinions are relevant to whether someone should use a VPS or not...
That's not what I wrote. I wrote that someone's terrible terrible views on human beings is relevant to whether you should take any advice from them whatsoever.
There's plenty of non-terrible humans that can advice you on VPSs.
What did DHH do? I've seen some of his youtube videos and he comes across as a super reasonable person.
He wants to shoot Roma
You can go to his blog and read for yourself in his own words about what he wants to do with certain ethnic minorities in European cities. The exact suggestion he has is "what one does when there are too many wolves". The man is pure human waste.
He's also a vocal supporter (see his blog) of another piece of filth, Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.
