2010s to 2020s code has been bad. We used to have 100% natively compiled apps, now everything is a Chrome browser wrapped JavaScript abomination, and before anyone assumes I hate JavaScript, I love doing front-end web development, and backend, and automation... and an unhealthy number of things (my GitHub is a mess). My point being, software quality has been downhill before AI, we just have nonsense rosy eyeglasses.
And before that we had PHP apps and VB apps, etc. Most code didn't have tests, most code wasn't version controlled. Functionality was much more limited, lots more stuff wasn't available on Linux.
Yes, we lost speed and resource usage but regular people don't care enough to pay for that or to punish offending apps in the marketplace.
