i define the hacker news "ratio" as number of upvotes / number of comments. lots of comments and few upvotes is a bad ratio indicating the article is not being well received.
in this case a ratio of 196 points to 479 comments points to a very poorly received yet comment-inspiring article.
his article went hugely viral and is being discussed. I would say by that metric it was a success.
