This was my thought as well. They were teaching us not to just read the words for their face value, to imagine the time and place the events occurred within.

Honestly, this is why at the conclusion of many books we would watch the movie (when available). Many movie adaptations are period pieces in terms of fashion and depicting struggles/victories that contemporary readers may not be able intuitively grasp.
