Why is it so puzzling? EU has become nothing but an authoritarian regime even violating the sovereignty of member states. It was working fine and well when it was an economic union, but now it has become more of a mafia that infiltrate and try to control every aspect of life of Europeans.
The US is not better in those regards, and is more likely to fall at this point. That would leave the EU as the last best place in the world to live.
