I've been reading John Evelyn's diary, among others from the 17th century. There is absolutely no sense there is a correct spelling of a word, as writing is correctly seen as speaking written down. Correct spelling is a modern invention of limited value (but helpful for AI).

Not really a "word nerd" situation. It's a really obvious typo. Might as well have said, "tee hee, I'm, like, autistic for words".
